The Neo-Cons, who had returned to power in the G. W. Bush administration after their dismissal from the Reagan White House during his second term, were and are particularly averse to publicly-held conspiracy theories, though they themselves are the masters of the same, as evidenced in their September 2000 Report of The Project for the New American Century (PNAC), “Rebuilding America’s Defenses: Strategy, Forces and Resources For a New Century”.
That document, inspired by Defense Secretary Dick Cheney in 1992, and written by a collaboration of many – including Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Dan Quayle, former Reagan education secretary William Bennett, Christian “social conservatives” like Gary Bauer, “neoconservatives” like Elliot Abrams, Afghan-born Khalilzad, Steve Forbes, and little brother Jeb Bush – insisted that “America’s global leadership, and its role as the guarantor of the current great-power peace, relies upon the safety of the American homeland; the preservation of a favorable balance of power in Europe, the Middle East and surrounding energy producing region, and East Asia…” (read that Iraq and Afghanistan), addressed “the truly revolutionary potential inherent in the notion of military transformation” that would allow US “forces to remain preeminent”, and concluded that the process of transformation “is likely to be a long one, absent some catastrophic and catalyzing event – like a new Pearl Harbor“.
Late in the evening of 9/11/2001, President Bush, after a long day of My Pet Goat and evasive maneuvers in Air Force One, wrote in his diary “The Pearl Harbor of the 21st century took place today… We think it’s Osama bin Laden.” And thereafter the entire PNAC Neo-Con wish list was enacted, with wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, an endless “War on Terror”, massively-increased military spending, a new Homeland Security bureaucracy relying on the Patriot Act, warrantless snooping by the NSA, “extraordinary renditions” to CIA black sites and waterboarding, the Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay torture sites, military tribunals, dismissal of Habeas Corpus – and all built on the carefully constructed Myth of 9/11 as the act of 19 irreverent, incompetent and diminutive Muslims armed with boxcutters and orchestrated by a wealthy Saudi hiding in a cave in the Hindu Kush mountains.
This Grand Conspiracy Theory far exceeded in counter-factual absurdity even Arlen Spector’s “Magic Bullet Theory” of the Lone Assassin Myth.
Conspiracy Theory: n. A hypothesis alleging that the members of a coordinated group are, and/or were, secretly working together to commit illegal or wrongful actions including attempting to hide the existence of the group and its activities. In notable cases the hypothesis contradicts the mainstream explanation for historical or current events (wiktionary.org).
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first use of the phrase “conspiracy theory” occurred in a 1909 article in The American Historical Review. Other sources predate this use by nearly four decades to 1871.
Originally a neutral term, since the mid-1960s it has acquired a derogatory meaning, implying a paranoid tendency to see the influence of some malign covert agency in events. The term is often used to automatically dismiss claims that the critic deems ridiculous, misconceived, paranoid, unfounded, outlandish, or irrational. A conspiracy theory that is proven to be correct, such as the notion that US President Richard Nixon and his aides conspired to cover up the Watergate burglary and associated events, is usually referred to as something else, such as investigative journalism or historical analysis.
Katherine K. Young, a Canadian religious studies professor at McGill University, states: “The fact remains, however, that not all conspiracies are imagined by paranoids. Historians show that every real conspiracy has had at least four characteristic features: groups, not isolated individuals; illegal or sinister aims, not ones that would benefit society as a whole; orchestrated acts, not a series of spontaneous and haphazard ones; and secret planning, not public discussion”. Above all else a real conspiracy is evidenced by provable facts.
Americans have long had a love-hate relationship with conspiracy theories, and the term came into the popular lexicon following the JFK assassination on November 22, 1963.
Americans were skeptical about the “Lone Gunman Theory” almost immediately after Kennedy was killed. In a poll conducted Nov. 22-27, 1963, Gallup found that 52% believed others were involved in a conspiracy to kill the president. A majority of Americans have maintained that “others were involved” in the shooting each time Gallup has asked this question over the past 50 years, except December 1966, when exactly half of Americans believed in a conspiracy.
By 1976, Americans’ belief in a JFK conspiracy theory swelled to 81%, as it was again in 2001. And the latest November 2013 poll still has 61% accepting the JFK assassination as a conspiracy, with the largest segment (25%) of those ascribing it to the federal government in general or the CIA, LBJ, the Secret Service or FBI/Hoover in particular).
What is not generally acknowledged, however, is that The United States of America was quite literally born of a Great Conspiracy Theory that was adopted by all the Founders, and that the nation’s most important historical moments were awash in conspiracy theories or actual conspiracies.
Orthodox US history acknowledges Grand Conspiracies when they are the malevolent plans and deeds of “The Other” against whom we then muster our highest values and virtues, but almost never when they are the covert machinations of our own establishment power brokers and institutions.
Harvard historian Bernard Bailyn argues in his prize-winning study, The Ideological Origins of the American Revolution (1967), that the American Revolution was based on a conspiracy theory which saw the individual actions of King George III as being governed by a singly unifying design, which was to impose tyranny on the UK’s North American colonies through the destruction of the English Constitution and all its inherent rights and privileges. (This perspective is mirrored in today’s right-wing and libertarian fears of government tyranny through the shredding of constitutional rights and liberties, particularly 2nd Amendment rights.)
This Grand Conspiracy Theory was endorsed by George Washington in the Fairfax Resolution of 1774, written in collaboration with George Mason (is it an odd coincidence that the thread leads from King George III, through Georges Washington and Mason to the two Georges Bush – perhaps as far back as St. George, the patron saint of England and his legendary battle with a dragon/Satan?).
Washington asserted the existence of a “regular, systematic plan” of oppression by which the British government was “endeavoring by every piece of art and despotism to fix the shackles of slavery upon us” (again reminiscent of today’s right-wing anti-government perspective).
Thomas Jefferson agreed, writing in a pamphlet of 1774 that although “single acts of tyranny may be ascribed to the accidental opinion of a day… a series of oppressions, begun at a distinguished period and pursued unalterably through every change of ministers, too plainly prove a deliberate and systematical plan of reducing us to slavery.”
That language was reiterated in the Declaration of Independence, written by Jefferson and edited by Franklin and others. John Adams made similar comments, and Bailyn argues that it was almost universally shared by sympathizers of the American cause.
The Declaration of Conspiracy
The US Declaration of Independence, considered the corner stone of the American nation and one of the most important historical documents of all time, signed in Congress in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, is a virtual celebration of conspiracy theory.
“…when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government and to provide new guards for their future security…”
This is followed by a laundry list of misdeeds and abuses committed by the British monarch, concluded with the insistence that these are not isolated complaints about disparate events but rather the implacable and systematic operations of a concerted plot – a conspiracy.
“The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having, in direct object, the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these States.”
The founding ideology of the United States of America was a Grand Conspiracy to reduce We the People to abject slavery.
Abraham Lincoln, often considered our greatest president, first gained notoriety as a young Representative from Illinois when he publicly and ruthlessly attacked President Polk for engineering a conspiracy to incite Mexico into military retaliation by means of a secretive invasion of Mexican territory by General Zachary Taylor, which led Congress to declare war on Mexico in 1846.
As with every US war since the War of 1812 (which was really the American Revolution Part Deux), a false flag conspiracy was manipulated by elements of the power structure to force both public opinion and political will toward military aggression.

Abraham Lincoln’s famous “House Divided” speech to the Republican National Convention in 1858, which led to his presidency, focused on a Slave Power Conspiracy (later reiterated by his Secretary of State William Seward). “Honest” Abe said:
“We cannot absolutely know that all these exact adaptations are the result of preconcert. But… when we see all these timbers joined together, and see they exactly make the frame of a house… in such a case, we find it impossible not to believe that [Senator Stephen Douglass, President Franklin Pierce, Chief Justice Roger Taney, and President James Buchanan] all understood each other from the beginning, and all worked upon a common plan or daft drawn before the fist lick was struck”.
The new Republican Party saw the slaveholder elites of the southern states conspiring to assert total control over the federal government, thus threatening the freedom and livelihood of every person in the north. It is not without irony that the even newer Republican Party of today includes a significant constituency which swims in very similar conspiracy theories about impending tyranny and loss of liberty. Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his armed supporters are only the latest incarnation of this fundamentally American manifestation. The UN Agenda-21 One World Government Conspiracy is another that has taken hold among Americans of diverse leanings. The Slippery Slope to Civilian Disarmament, propagated with such effect by the NRA, is yet another which feeds the American hunger for conspiratorial fantasy.
Each Grand Conspiracy Theory has elements of truth within it, though typically seen through the thick lenses of ideological distortion. As a rule, Americans either fully embrace or derisively dismiss each Conspiracy Theory. And the plethora of such Conspiracy Theories, ranging from the ridiculous to the sublime, make it difficult to discern which are evidence-based, as well as making it all too easy for the Establishment and its Controlled Mainstream Media to discredit those which threaten to expose the malfeasance of the power elite.
The greatest and most intensely dismissed of all Great American Conspiracies and Cover-ups is the 9/11 story in its two essential forms: the Official Conspiracy Theory which violates both fundamental physics as well as common sense, and the several variations of the Alternative Conspiracy Theory which are based on years of intensive research, analysis and scientific investigation.

The most comprehensive and well-researched books on the 9/11 Conspiracy include the ten books on the subject by Professor Emeritus David Ray Griffin, particularly The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions (2004), The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions About the Bush Administration and 9-11 (2004), 9/11 and American Empire: Intellectuals Speak Out (2006), New Pearl Harbor Revisited: 9/11, the Cover-up and the Exposé (2008), The Mysterious Collapse of World Trade Center 7: Why the Final Official Report About 9/11 Is Unscientific and False (2009), and 9/11 Ten Years Later: When State Crimes Against Democracy Succeed (2011).
Also essential for big picture understanding of the 9/11 event are Crossing the Rubicon: The Decline of the American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil (2004) by former LAPD detective Michael C. Ruppert (who recently committed suicide after being hounded for years and possibly poisoned), and 9/11 Synthetic Terror: Made in USA (2005, 2011) by historian Webster Griffin Tarpley.
Each source and each theory should be examined both objectively and skeptically, considering the credentials and credibility of each author and evaluating their evidence and analysis independently of any questions about the authors.
For instance, while Tarpley had a long and close association with the controversial Lyndon LaRouche and believes anthropogenic global warming is a hoax, he nevertheless has a unique and insightful perspective on the long history of Anglo-American insider conspiracies, including 9/11 as the penultimate example of “synthetic terror” intended to alter world history.
Operation Northwoods was a detailed plan to provoke a war with Cuba and institute regime change soon after the Cuban Revolution, and which was supported by the entire Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Pentagon. The document, entitled “Justification for US Military Intervention in Cuba”, was provided to Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara on March 13, 1962. The NOFORN classification meant the project was to be kept secret from all foreign nationals, even those with security clearances.
Written in response to a request from the Chief of the Cuba Project, CIA officer and General Edward Lansdale, the Top Secret memorandum describes US plans to covertly engineer various pretexts that would “justify” a US invasion of Cuba.
General Edward Lansdale was one of the leading architects of the catastrophic US involvement in Vietnam, and the founder of the Special Warfare School at Fort Bragg, North Carolina (where CIA agents trained men such as Lt. Col. Daniel Marvin to take out JFK assassination witnesses and used the Dallas assassination as a teaching model, and where according to Marvin the training was “not only in guerrilla warfare, but also in assassination and terrorism”). Lansdale worked closely with former Wall Street lawyer Allen Dulles when he became head of the CIA under Eisenhower, cooked up the plan for the Bay of Pigs invasion and foisted it off on the newly inaugurated President Kennedy, thinking the young and inexperienced president would send in the Marines and instigate thermonuclear war with the Soviet Union, which the Joint Chiefs believed was winnable until 1963.
Northwoods planners considered mimicking the Maine incident of 1898 which was used as the pretext for the Spanish-American War, and also proposed a murderous campaign of terror against US civilians: “We could develop a Communist Cuban terror campaign in the Miami area, in other Florida cities and even in Washington” – demonstrating beyond doubt that Pentagon and CIA elements have no inhibitions about killing their own troops or US citizens, and offering an important perspective for the analysis of 9/11.
Project Northwoods was rejected by President Kennedy and was never carried out in regard to Cuba, but such detailed plans that have the unanimous support of Pentagon and CIA leaders don’t just get shelved – they remain active for any future contingency.
Northwood Incidents to establish a credible attack:
- Start rumors (many). Use clandestine radio.
- Land friendly Cubans in uniform “over-the-fence” to stage attack on base.
- Capture Cuban (friendly) saboteurs inside the base.
- Start riots near the base main gate (friendly Cubans).
- Blow up ammunition inside the base: start fires.
- Burn aircraft on air base (sabotage).
- Lob mortar shells from outside of base into base.
- Capture assault teams approaching from the sea or vicinity of Guantanamo City.
- Capture militia group which storms base.
- Sabotage ship in harbor; large fires – naphthalene.
- Sink ship near harbor entrance. Conduct funerals for mock-victims.
“A ‘Remember the Maine’ incident could be arranged: We could blow up a US ship in Guantanamo Bay and blame Cuba. Casualty lists in US newspapers would cause a helpful wave of national indignation.”
“Use of MIG type aircraft by US pilots could provide additional provocation. Harassment of civil air, attacks on surface shipping and destruction of US military drone aircraft by MIG type planes would be useful as complementary actions. Reasonable copies of the MIG could be produced from US resources in about three months.”
The most complicated project proposed by the Northwoods brainstormers was spelled out in a Top Secret “Annex to Appendix to Enclosure A: Pretext to Justify a US Military Intervention in Cuba”. This was a precise template for the remote control and plane-switching theory that is able to explain so many discrepant facts about 9/11 – down to the final detail of feigned cluelessness.
“Hijacking attempts against civil air and surface craft should appear to continue as harassing measures condoned by the government of Cuba.”
“It is possible to create an incident which will demonstrate convincingly that a Cuban aircraft has attacked and shot down a chartered civil airliner enroute from the United States. The destination would be chosen only to cause the flight plan to cross Cuba. The passengers could be a group of college students off on a holiday.”
“An aircraft at Eglin AFB would be painted and numbered as an exact duplicate for a civil registered aircraft belonging to a CIA proprietary organization in the Miami area. At the designated time the duplicate would be substituted for the actual civil aircraft and would be loaded with selected passengers, all boarded under carefully prepared aliases. The actual aircraft would be converted to a drone.”
“The drone aircraft and the actual aircraft will be scheduled to allow a rendezvous south of Florida. From the rendezvous point the passenger-carrying aircraft will descend to minimum altitude and go directly into an auxiliary field at Eglin AFB where arrangements will have been made to evacuate the passengers and return the aircraft to its original status. The drone aircraft meanwhile will continue to fly the filed flight plan. When over Cuba the drone will be transmitting on the international distress frequency a “MAY DAY” message stating he is under attack by Cuban MIG aircraft. The transmission will be interrupted by destruction of the aircraft which will be triggered by radio signal.”
This plan offers important clues as to what might have happened to civilian aircraft on 9/11. Global Hawk technology had already been proven to be able to remotely pilot a large aircraft to a precise target. Also, at 11:44 AM on 9/11/01, news reports from Cleveland stated: A Boeing 767 out of Boston made an emergency landing Tuesday at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport due to concerns that it may have a bomb aboard, said Mayor Michael R. White. White said the plane had been moved to a secure area of the airport, and was evacuated. United identified the plane as Flight 93 (the plane that allegedly flew into the Pentagon).
The Big Lie
“The Big Lie” was a term coined by Adolf Hitler (and later used by Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels), in his 1925 book Mein Kampf, about the use of a lie so “colossal” that no one would believe that someone “could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously”.
L’Effroyable Imposture (“The Horrifying Fraud”) is the original French title of a 2002 book by French journalist and political activist Thierry Meyssan. Its English edition is entitled 9/11: The Big Lie.
The book argues that the attacks of September 11, 2001, were “false flag” operations directed by right-wingers in the US government and the military-industrial complex who sought a casus belli for military action in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The book was a #1 bestseller in France for six of the seven weeks following its release, and was the first major exposé of 9/11.
Part One: “A Bloody Stage is Set”
The actions that provoked the collapse of the Twin Towers in the heart of New York and damaged part of the Pentagon building were not the result of attempts by foreign suicide pilots, but were rather an action organized by a group within the US administration; an internal plot aimed at driving opinion and forcing the course of events (a “New Pearl Harbor”).
Part Two: “The Death of Democracy in America”
The war on Afghanistan was not a response to the September 11 events, since it was prepared long before in coordination with the British. President Bush found support in evangelical groups to launch a crusade against Islam, according to the strategy known as “Clash of Civilizations”. The “War on Terror” was a pretext to cut individual liberties in the United States and later in allied countries in order to impose a military regime.
Part Three: “The Empire Strikes Back”
Osama bin Laden was a CIA fabrication and never stopped working for the US Secret Service. The bin Laden and Bush families jointly manage their wealth by means of the Carlyle Group. The US administration was taken over by some industrial groups (weapons, oil, pharmaceuticals) whose interests would be defended by the government to the detriment of others. The CIA would develop a program of interference at all levels, which would include the use of torture and political assassination.

International Hearings on the Events of September 11, 2001
These took place during the 10th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. The four-day event was held at Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, from September 8–11, 2011.
This volume is the final report issued from the International Hearings on the Events of September 11, 2001, held in Toronto, Canada. Over the four days of the Toronto Hearings, noted authors and scientific experts presented the best evidence gathered in the previous decade to a panel of distinguished individuals whose opinion on the strength of the evidence should carry considerable weight in the public sphere.
The four panelists were: Ferdinando Imposimato, former Senior Judge and Honorary President of the Supreme Court of Italy; Herbert Jenkins, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at McMaster University, educated at Oberlin College and Harvard University; Richard Lee, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of Toronto and Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, previous positions at Harvard, Rutgers and Columbia University; and David Johnson, Professor Emeritus of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Tennessee and former President of the US Fulbright Association, educated at Yale and Cornell.
Much of the evidence these panelists heard and questioned during the Toronto Hearings is presented in the opening chapters of this report. Following the evidence, each panelist has presented his findings, conclusions and recommendations based on the evidence.
Panelist David Johnson noted that much of the evidence, “ignored by the mainstream media, cries out for a wider audience and a rigorous but fair review by independent authorities,” and that a “new, honest investigation conducted with subpoena powers should be empanelled to look into whether such crimes might have been committed.”
Herbert Jenkins found that previous US government investigations of 9/11 “were designed not to understand what actually happened, but rather to defend the official account, which they did by selective omissions and distortions of the evidence” and believes that “without a more open government, [there is] no way to repair the profound distrust of government that now cripples democracy in America.”
Richard Lee said that the Toronto Hearings were “extraordinarily effective in presenting carefully compiled scientific evidence that casts serious doubt on the veracity of the official story” and was “impressed by the seriousness of the witnesses, their willingness to submit their evidence to scientific scrutiny and evaluation, and their challenging the authors of the official story to refute the evidence presented”.
Ferdinando Imposimato held that the best course forward to achieve justice is to “submit the best evidence concerning the involvement in 9/11 of specific individuals to the International Criminal Court Prosecutor and ask him to investigate” and names potential targets of the ICC investigation.
The opinions of the Toronto Hearings panelists make a clear and unmistakable case that the official account of 9/11 is false, and that the only way to realize truth and accountability is to tear down the wall of secrecy and lies that has been erected by the United States government around the events of 9/11.
While American independence may have been made possible by a Grand Conspiracy Theory, the Last Big Lie of 9/11 was the pretext for the shredding of what is left of democracy in the United States, and should be resisted by everyone who considers themselves to be patriots or defenders of freedom, truth and the American Way.
